This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher who teaches a class full of English Language Learners and some students with learning disabilities. Students at this age are learning the fundamentals of the language and beginning to read.
Since my students are starting to read now, I have noticed that they sometimes lose focus and don’t want to read anymore. This is mainly because they get tired of sitting at their seats and reading by themselves or to their partners. Therefore, sometimes I allow them to choose a spot anywhere in the classroom to sit and read, but I have noticed that it can be a distraction or not comfortable for the students.
Due to these problems, I have decided to make a little center for my students that primarily focus on reading. I already have books for my students to use and read but I want to designate an area in my classroom that my students can go to and read. To make this possible, I have requested a small carpet along with some pillows and soft seat cushions for the children to use as they are reading. This will motivate them to go to my center and continue reading in order to become successful learners.
This will make a huge difference in my student’s motivation and also academic progress. Have a specific place to go to and read will encourage all my students to read. You can help make this possible for my students.
