Encourage Movement While Learning

Help me give my students more seating to encourage them to be on task and learn. These materials will build my flexible seating classroom! The core stools let students move and wobble while learning.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Majority of my students come from low-income families and do not have a lot at home. Most of their parents work and they do not have a lot of support. I make it a priority to show my kids I really care about them and that I am there for them through any issue. When they walk in the door they know they can come to me right away with any problem. Students also care for each other.

When my students come into my classroom they are excited to learn because they feel safe and have a sense of belonging.

My students love learning new things and are always amazed when they learn new concepts and see how it connects. An example of this was when we were learning about equivalent fractions they kept saying, "mind blown" because you can multiply the numerator and the denominator by any number and the new fraction is equivalent to the original fraction. They then had to draw a picture to prove it and see how the picture really proves it, they kept saying "amazing". Moments like these melt my heart because it shows my students are engaged and motivated to learn.

My Project

Adding physical activity to students’ daily routine during academic tasks has been recommended by intervention studies based on the Optimal Stimulation Theory. Students often bounce their feet or doodle when under-stimulated. Adding core stools and different seating options to students’ academic routines can help generate increased on task behavior and reduce disruptive behaviors. This allows students stimulation, reaching a level of stimulatory homeostasis.

Sensory modulation strategies, including core stools, can provide the central nervous system with the type of sensory stimuli that bodies require to attain and maintain an optimal state of arousal for learning.

Both the Optimal Stimulation Theory and the Sensory Processing Theory offer important ideas as to why kore stools and different seating options may work with students in increasing time on-task, increasing academic achievement, and raising energy levels. Both theories offer suggestions as to why the added stimulation creates allows for an environment with optimal engagement, attention, and learning.
