My Project
If you ever want to see the critical thinking skills and creative capabilities of a group of students, stop by my classroom during a biology or anatomy lab. My students are curious, creative, and motivate me to make each lesson better than the last. My students come from extremely hard-working, middle class families. They count down the days for each dissection, they work diligently to complete each lab assigned, and their excitement is evident each time they are given the opportunity to step outside the norm and learn in a hands-on environment. They deserve a world opportunity, and I work my very best to give it to them.
Keeping the lab stations stocked and ready for seven science classes and 220 students is a difficult task!
When the pandemic started in 2020, the unopened disinfectant wipes, gloves, and hand sanitizer from our lab stations were donated to local clinics to help with the PPE shortage. My students and I were happy to help, but I have been unable to fully restock our classroom supply of these materials... leading to glove and cleaning supply shortages during our dissections and various labs. The budget I am given for the class is used up quickly at the beginning of the year when I purchase the costly dissection specimen for anatomy, leaving me to spend my own money to ensure the safety of each dissection. Gloves, tissues, soap, and wipes may seem like trivial items to most... but these items are all necessary components of a safe and effective lab station!
