This year, I teach a class of 32 first graders. My school is in a changing neighborhood in New York City. My students have many different learning and management needs in order to ensure a successful educational endeavor.
My students are intelligent and eager to learn.
I am trying to pass on my love for reading to this class, but, as a result of low reading levels and a few interesting books, this has been very challenging. I am trying to create a collaborative classroom that adheres to all of the varied interests of my students.
My Project
Right now, my library is nearly empty. I moved classrooms this year and had to leave my library in the classroom that I moved from. The room that I am in right now has a very sad and bare library. My students are eager to learn and read but they don't have access to the books that are at their "just-right" reading levels.
I want to see my students grow and thrive as readers but without the proper materials, this will be impossible.
