My Students

My second graders come from all over the world. They each bring their own unique talents and experiences to the classroom and are incredibly excited about learning.

They are full of energy and enthusiasm and are beginning to come together to support one another!

They are passionate and love learning! As we read stories, they are constantly examining the illustrations and making observations that they are eager to share with one another. They are always asking questions, wondering why things work the way they do, or how things come about. They love working together with one another and encouraging each other to become leaders!

My Project

Last school year we noticed that our students were incredibly engaged whenever we tied artistic activities into our curriculum. Many of our students who typically struggled to regulate their behavior during the day, were calm and focused during these artistic extension activities. With reflection, we began to incorporate more art into the curriculum for our students, and began using it to not only engage children in learning, but to regulate their own emotions, make our classroom more beautiful, and share their learning with others. However because of a lack of funding, we really only had markers, and crayons to create these pieces that we displayed throughout the school.

This year it is my goal to continue to teach children social and emotional skills through arts and literacy.

The books chosen for this project will be used as mentor texts to help my students become aware of their own emotions, as well as the emotions of others, and begin to develop a sense of a community. After reading these books, we will use the paints, markers, colored pencils and other art supplies to create large displays to post in our classroom and the hallway. As we create the art we will discuss connections between the piece we are creating with what we read in the read aloud. Our art will serve to help us reflect on what we learned, and encourage others to take action around the same topic. We will also discuss how creating art through painting, coloring or collaging helps us to calm down, so students begin to recognize art as a way to regulate their emotions.

As students begin to acknowledge their social-emotional needs we will continue to introduce them to other coping techniques to help regulate their emotions, including using sensory toys or reflecting on nature.
