This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our school is located in one of the poorest neighborhoods of Los Angeles. With a high rate of crime and gang violence, my students must navigate many obstacles to make it to school everyday but they do so driven by a commitment to education and a better future. The community, marked by its struggles, imposes a heavy burden on my students leading to significant stress and anxiety. My office is a safe space for students to retreat from the pressures of their homes and the community.
As a counselor in this challenging, stressful environment, it becomes crucial for me to provide my students with materials and resources that aid in managing and alleviating their stress and anxiety.
Offering small incentives, furthermore, become beacons of acknowledgement, reminding my students that someone notices their triumphs against the odds. Empowering my students with the tools to cope with their surroundings is not just a professional duty, but a genuine commitment to fostering the well-being and mental health of these resilient individuals who continually strive against the odds to pursue their education. We need fidget bracelets, a Zen Garden Kit and keychains.
