My Project

At our school, we believe in the power of student leadership—especially among our middle schoolers. Our Red Shirts program was created to uplift, empower, and challenge a select group of 5th–8th grade students who consistently demonstrate positive leadership and character. Each year, 10–15 students of color, primarily Black students, are chosen to participate. They are given red polos—distinct from the standard navy school uniform—to help them stand out as role models within the school community.

My project is intended to obtain essential tools to strengthen the Red Shirts program for next school year.

We are requesting student planners to help our scholars build responsibility, organizational skills, and time management. A leadership workbook filled with growth-oriented activities will help guide our sessions and challenge students to reflect and develop as individuals and leaders. Additionally, we’re asking for red t-shirts that we can custom design and print in our school’s fabrication lab—giving students ownership of their identity as leaders.

Last year, our Red Shirts completed a powerful Black History research project and presented their findings to younger students. This coming year, they’ll dive into a new project focused on local and national community leaders, helping them see themselves as future change-makers. We also plan to invite guest speakers of color to inspire and reflect the potential our students carry.

Our Red Shirts are truly something special. With your support, we can continue building a strong foundation for leadership, identity, and voice—because their voices matter, and their futures are bright.
