Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Hi, I teach English at CSM School in Brownsville, Texas. For many students, English is the most challenging subject—especially when it comes to writing. That's why I offer after-school and lunch tutorials to give them extra support. But encouraging students to stay after hours to practice writing essays—something that requires a lot of time and effort—is no easy task.

My project is designed to make our classroom a more welcoming, engaging, and functional space where students want to stay and work.

I’m asking for essential supplies like paper, pencils, erasers, and dry-erase boards—plus high-utility items like metal storage cabinets, side tables, pencil sharpeners, healthy snacks to fuel their focus, and extra large food storage bins with lids to safely store it away.

Here's why this matters:

While the average score in Texas for the STAAR/EOC writing portion is 3.8 out of 10, my students average an incredible 9.56 points. The difference? In my class, students write by hand—no typing, no shortcuts—just old-fashioned pencil and paper, a dictionary, and critical thinking.

These materials will help:

Keep writing supplies organized and accessible with lockable, mobile cabinets. Provide two side tables—one for snacks and water, and one for writing supplies. Reduce wait times with multiple pencil sharpeners. Maintain focus with healthy snacks and bottled water. Support large tutorial groups—up to 40 students after school and 15 at lunch.

I currently purchase most materials out of pocket, including a new electric sharpener every year. With your support, we can build a sustainable, efficient, and inspiring space where students feel cared for and motivated to succeed.
