This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In my 2nd grade classroom, my students are vibrant, curious, and diverse. Many come from immigrant families, bringing with them a rich variety of languages and cultures from our South Philadelphia neighborhood. They are special because they are not only learning the standard 2nd grade curriculum but also working hard to master English while preserving their native languages.
I am specifically requesting the following materials to build an ESL classroom that will foster a supportive environment to build my students' confidence in themselves and encourage them to take risks as learners.
Culturally relevant books and picture dictionaries will provide students with engaging, age-appropriate stories that foster a love of reading in both English and their home languages. Folders, stamps, skin color crayons, and stickers help organize our language-learning activities and create visual, hands-on experiences that make the learning process more interactive and fun. ESL toolkit and guidance books will help me, as a new teacher, build a more robust set of class routines and activities to support my students.
My goal is to ensure that my students feel confident and supported in their language learning journey. These materials will provide the tools they need to thrive academically while also helping them build strong communication skills that will last a lifetime. With your help, we can empower our young learners to succeed in both English and their native languages, giving them the skills to thrive in our diverse world.
