Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My middle school ESL students are bright, curious, and eager to learn—but many face significant challenges outside the classroom. Language barriers, limited access to academic materials at home, and socioemotional stress can all hinder their ability to fully engage and thrive in school. This project is designed to help remove those barriers and empower my students to succeed.

The requested resources will serve two main purposes: academic support and social-emotional development.

Academic Support:

Hands-on learning tools—such as bilingual books, educational games, visual aids, and interactive materials—will make content more accessible and engaging for English language learners. These resources will support differentiated instruction, reinforce vocabulary and key academic concepts, and provide students with opportunities to learn through play and collaboration. For example, during a lesson on story structure, students might read a bilingual version of a folktale, use story sequencing cards to retell the plot, and then create their own mini-book retelling the story in both English and their native language. Activities like this build literacy skills while honoring students’ linguistic backgrounds.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL):

To support students’ emotional well-being, I plan to enhance our classroom environment with SEL-focused materials such as calming corner supplies, affirmation posters, and reflection journals. These resources will help students learn to regulate their emotions, develop empathy, and build resilience. During morning meetings or SEL lessons, students might write in their journals about their feelings, discuss positive affirmations, or use calming tools to self-regulate during moments of stress.

With your support, my classroom will become a more inclusive, engaging, and nurturing space—one where every student, regardless of background or language level, can feel seen, supported, and inspired to learn. These resources will help my students build confidence, strengthen their academic skills, and develop the emotional tools they need to thrive both in and out of school.
