Empowering Voices: An iPad to Bridge Communication & Enhance Articulation
Help me give my students opportunities to improve their speech and language. I am seeking support to provide an iPad that will open up new opportunities for individualized instruction and interactive experiences for my special needs students.
iPads offer a plethora of engaging and interactive apps and programs designed to support speech therapy goals, such as enhancing articulation, social communication, literacy and reading comprehension. An iPad will assist my special needs students who are auditory, visual and kinesthetic learners. Research indicates that engaging multiple senses enhances learning and improves information retention.

Ways I can utilize an iPad during therapy: (a) Students can record their voices to practice various speech sounds or identify instances of stuttering, allowing them to track their progress and receive feedback. (b) As a PROMPT-trained therapist, students can watch their website's video models to demonstrate proper speech techniques to improve articulation. (c) Edpuzzle, Vooks and Boom Cards are all educational tools that can improve reading comprehension, literacy and social communication skills. (d) Using the CoughDrop app during classroom push-in sessions can serve as a model to increase language and participation.
Two-thirds of the students on my caseload are minimally verbal or non-verbal, and communicate using IEP-driven voice output devices (e.g., LAMP, TouchChat). Although these students receive their devices from the district, they oftentimes arrive at school either uncharged or without them. It would be helpful for the speech teacher to have access to these apps on a school-based device. Additionally, it will be used to evaluate students for AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices and will enable them to practice various programs to identify the most appropriate program. Access to an iPad will streamline the often lengthy AAC assessment process.
