This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This project aims to foster the social-emotional development of our students, particularly our newcomer population. As a local neighborhood school in Chicago, we serve a diverse student body and have recently welcomed an increasing number of newcomers to the United States. To support them during this crucial transition, I will be leading a small group designed to provide a safe and nurturing space where students can openly share their experiences.
Our discussions will focus on their journey to the U.S., the challenges of adjusting to a new lifestyle, and any hardships they may have faced.
The group will also explore key topics such as managing anxiety, overcoming feelings of isolation, building meaningful relationships, and developing effective coping skills.
We will provide incentives (snacks, small toys, stickers, etc.) that recognize students' engagement and progress throughout the program to encourage participation and commitment. These incentives are meant to reinforce a sense of accomplishment and motivate students to stay dedicated to their personal growth and the group.
Through this group, we aim to empower students by equipping them with the emotional tools and support they need to navigate this new chapter in their lives.
