My Students

My students are so very thirsty for knowledge! My students come to school already behind their peers. I want to give them the tools they need to become the best they can be and be caught up. Many live with a single parent, grandparents, or with a working family that does not get to see them.

The class size of this second grade classroom is at the max and the needs of the children are many.

I teach an ESL friendly classroom, with many of the students not being able to understand what is going on in class. We are located in Philadelphia and this is a second grade classroom. About 70% of students are currently reading below grade level and many students are trying their hardest to catch up. . We try to build up our students background knowledge and basic skills with computer based programs to meet their needs. We need children to be able to have a chance to be with the rest of their peers- a computer will help with this situation.

My Project

Empowering Students Through Art in our school is a big must do. My second graders will be able to use this laptop for different interventions. Art is a major part of our everyday curriculum and students can express themselves through this. My second graders can empower themselves through art and transfer this knowledge into math and reading. My students will be able to use the computer art programs to practice drawing words and them transferring that knowledge onto paper. We can also use this laptop to practice our reading and math skills. This would be a great reinforcer connecting picture to words and words to pictures. My students will be able to understand math concepts by drawing them out and looking for examples themselves on the Internet. We know math is all around us, on a daily basis.

If my children are able to get the supports they need, through the use of a laptop and these programs, I can get them to read, do math on level and express themselves through art.

It is so important for my students to learn to read now, in the early years. If my students continue to struggle the gap just becomes too large for them not to fall behind. Please help us! Thank you for taking the time to read my project.
