Help me give my students subscriptions to Upfront Magazine by The New York Times. Each student will receive 13 magazines over the course of the year and have access to online videos, discussions and enrichment resources.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My middle school scholars are such an exciting group of students with mixed interests, goals, and learning abilities. We are part of a Pre-K through 8th grade school located in a low socio-economic area of NYC. These 7th and 8th graders have a strong desire to know what is going on in the world and this interest needs to be cultivated every day of their lives.
My scholars dream big dreams that need to be enriched through knowledge and deep understanding of the world we live in.
They are future authors, doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs and educators. In order for them to be successful in life, they need to see and experience the world beyond their own neighborhood, make connections between their own lives and the lives of others on the other side of the world, and build their own opinions about all the issues in today's society.
My Project
These current events magazines will build upon the middle school curriculum by incorporating digital teaching tools, videos, discussion questions, self-assessments, writing resources and distance learning support. With the articles' target audience being teens, these magazines get scholars excited to learn by engaging them, enlivening the lessons, illuminating curricular topics and encouraging deeper exploration.
With print and digital access, the scholars will be able to use these resources at home during remote learning and in school with their Blended Learning schedules.
This lends itself effectively to the Flipped Classroom Model of Blended Learning because they can access the videos and online resources at home and come into class ready to discuss and further explore the topics on a deeper level. For those scholars that have chosen complete Remote Learning, they will still have access to all of the materials without even stepping into the classroom.
Some of the scholar created projects these magazines will be used for are school newsletters, world news articles, persuasive essays, information books, poetry collections, and graphic novels. The magazine article topics cover national news, international issues, historical events and current debates in society. This broad range of subject matter supports an entire years' worth of reading and writing curriculum for middle schoolers.
