This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Having snacks and essential school supplies available to all students in a high school counselor's office is necessary. Snacks address students' immediate needs, such as hunger or low energy, which can significantly impact their focus and emotional well-being. The majority of the time students stop by my office and ask for a snack or something to calm them during class that they can take with them. My school is a community for newly arrived immigrants from different cultural backgrounds. Starting a new life in an American school and learning a new language is challenging for all students.
One of the common issues at our school is that students don't have permanent housing, warm meals, clothes, or school supplies.
As a counselor, it is important for me to try and support them in the best way. This approach not only helps in meeting basic needs, but also in creating a welcoming space where students feel understood and valued. Giving them a snack or a sensory toy during the day always makes them happy, and they are excited to return and ask for more!
