My students just found out that I will be teaching art to them starting this January. My school is a Title I school and I am a certified special education art teacher. I am very excited to begin a new program following the blueprints in visual arts. I want to start them on mono printing.
I'll be teaching ICT classes which is a population of general education and children with special needs.
I want to teach them about "Humanities" and diverse cultures, and get them to express who they are through printmaking. If we had Gelli Plates, we could use paint and paper to make mono prints. Each child could use color, and combs (which I will teach them how to make from scratch) and share with each other their prints. Printmaking is a part of the Visual Arts Blueprints and we do not have the supplies to do this. If we started off with five Gelli Plates, we could take turns using them, and it would be a great start to this new art program.
My Project
My students need 5 Gelli Printing Plates and one instructional book on printmaking. My students can research their origins first, and find colors and symbols of where their ancestors came from. There are many ways to create a personal print. You can use small objects, twigs, yarn and cut up erasers to add and personalize the prints. The goal is to empower art through Humanties and come together and share. "What makes us different, yet what do we all have in common to connect us?"
My students come from a diverse population.
We are a strong community and unite as a family in our classes. My students are fiercely proud of where they come from, and we have a lot of dual language classes. Art brings them together as they not only learn but can express their individual feelings. My hope is that making mono prints with them will unite them. I feel character education and Humanties, kindness, and compassion toward each other can be taught early on, expressing it through the arts.
