Empowering Students Through the Expression of Their Emotions
My students need Kimochi dolls to help them share their emotions, experience healing, feel empowered and ultimately change their community.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Today with technology like facebook and texting we express our emotions with smiley faces and LOL. My students are dealing with huge burdens and stresses and their voices and emotions need to be heard and healed.
I currently have the pleasure of teaching 30 beautiful, smart second graders.
My students attend a bilingual dual immersion school in California and our school district serves lower socioeconomic families. My students are fluent in both Spanish and English and we spend half our day speaking Spanish and half in English. Our theme for the year is Global Citizenship and exploring our world. My students love learning about geography, different cultures, customs and traditions. They are hungry for knowledge and desire to grow and be good people more than anything. We love to do art and we use a lot of music during our time together. We are a family and every morning when we enter we recite a part of our creed. "Estoy chiquito pero puedo hacer cosas grandes" which means "I am little but I can do big things". My students face many challenges yet they are always eager to learn and I have no doubt my students will be the future leaders of not only our community, but our world.
My Project
I am requesting Kimochi dolls, feelings cards and feelings dolls. These resources will allow my students and I to learn about different emotions, identify them in our own lives, learn how to express them and then also learn how to cope with them. The Kimochi products will be used every single morning in my classroom. My students will choose a feeling doll to show us how they are feeling they will also be given sentence frames to share these emotions with members of our class family. The Kimochi dolls will also be used for students to think through their actions and make a connection between how they are feeling and what they did. In our classroom we use a system called restorative justice and these tools will be a crucial part to my students freely expressing their emotions. We will also use the dolls for our character development literature unit. My students will identify which feeling leaders like MLK Jr., Cesar Chavez and many more had while they were changing the world.
My students come to school with many pressures such as hunger, poverty, abuse, separation from family members, violence, substances and many other circumstances as well as resiliency and joy.
My students have not learned to identify emotions and this leads to anger or staying silent. Kimochi dolls will empower my students to use their voice, own their emotions, and ultimately this empowerment and liberation from silence and the cycle of oppression will free my students to be agents of change.
More than half of students from low‑income households
