Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
With each increase in class size, our per child budget decreases. Unfortunately the area of the arts is sometimes the first budget to get modified. I want to make sure my students have access to the art materials they need to access a full and well rounded curriculum.
I teach a group of enthusiastic and energetic 1st grade students who love to express themselves in words and illustrations.
Our first grade class is part of a small, public Title 1 elementary school with a large population of second language learners. Although these youngsters come from the same local neighborhood, their socioeconomic and multicultural backgrounds are very varied. No matter their beginnings, our end goal is to prepare them to have the characteristics and skills needed to learn, work, and live successfully.
My Project
Rigor is the first word in first grade! These budding readers are spending about two-thirds of their day on language arts lessons. Although the word "art" is in the subject title of "language arts", unfortunately there is not always enough time or materials needed to spend on the art part. I appreciate that learning to read and write is very important in building the foundation these students need but I also appreciate that this is the time in these young students' lives when it is imperative to help foster the love of reading and writing, not just the skills and strategies. Watercolor painting and drawing are ways to do both! Involving the creativity of the arts to support what is being taught and learned within reading units is a way of empowering students through art! They will be excited to learn more so they have more to paint or draw about and that will help foster a love of learning! I plan to have at least one meaningful art project for each of the reading units throughout the year.
Using art within the reading units will allow some students to shine just as brightly as the most proficient readers through their visual representations of what they have been reading and discussing.
I am a visual learner so I understand the importance of and the need to express ideas in more ways than just the spoken and written word. These art materials will empower these students as they communicate and relate to their peers visually.
These paints, crayons, pencils and special papers I am requesting will allow my students to have the resources they need to express themselves and their knowledge in a creative and fun format.
