My scholars in my room love to move. We regularly stop work time to dance or exercise in some way before getting back to the business of learning. The problem begins when they are expected to sit down. They are like little jumping beans struggling to sit still and work.
Many of my scholars come from challenging home lives and often the best part of their day is inside our classroom.
These first graders would benefit from choice seating where they would have the option to sit in a chair/stool/area that encourages movement and is conducive to their learning style. Active learning and motion is a constant in order to keep my students focused on the task at hand. One of the biggest challenges is to empower students to focus through their educational journey. Research has proved that scholars learn better with options to move while learning. The key to successful learning is keeping the students attention and interest while teaching the lesson.
My Project
When you walk into our first grade classroom, you will see blended learning in action! Students are working on iPads in different areas of the room, a small group of students is at the back table with the teacher and others are in groups at tables or on the floor using manipulatives. Each student is working on his or her level and is actively engaged in both their learning and progress. Students are encouraged to find seating that best helps them to concentrate and do their best work. By providing different seating options, I will be able to encourage group work as well as help those students that need movement while they learn. Stability wobble stools and wobble chair bands will allow all students to learn in the best way possible, with movement.
This choice will allow them to have the movement they need with little distraction to others, while being able to focus on the work at hand.
The Kore Chair is lightweight and easy to move, allowing my first graders to move the stool around the classroom safely. These seats will create a positive classroom environment where the students are empowered through the art of learning!
