Empowering Students Through Art: Teaching Math Through Art!

My students need collage materials such as foam shapes, feathers, and buttons to make patterns and sort by attributes!

My Students

My students live in a high poverty, urban area. They go to a community school where every child receives free breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Many of our students live in public housing, with relatives, or are homeless. Many of my students are second language learners. Many of the children do not have their needs met at home. This is often due to lack of finances, long work days, and everyday stress.

My students are excited to come to school and crave the routine of our school day.

One of the main focuses of our school is to integrate the arts into learning.

My Project

Preschoolers learn best through play. Math is taught through everyday routines and activities. Patterns, identifying shapes, and sorting by attributes are often seen throughout the classroom in a variety of ways. Making learning fun and exciting, makes students want to participate.

Children love art!

Shiny, sparkly, messy; you name it, they love it! I am planning on using interesting collage materials that are different sizes, textures, and shapes to teach math concepts such as patterns, shapes, and sorting. Children need ongoing, hands-on practice to engage in math lessons. Children will be able to sort by color, size, shape, and texture. They will be able to make patterns using colorful straws and laces. Students will be introduced to the concept of symmetry as they make open ended art with colored pasta shapes.
