Empowering Students Through Art - STEAM For Us As Well!

My Students

Van Gogh stated, "If you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced". My students may have heard many "you cannot" in their short lives, but it is my desire to inspire them, to encourage them to reach for the stars through the medium of art.

I have a "grape bunch" of special needs students who are not defined by their disabilities, but by their willingness to give their heart in every endeavor we undertake.

My interest is to help them every step of the way, to motivate and uplift them so that school for them is a place that they want to be. "Empowering them through Art" is one sure way to do this. A few of my students have low self esteem and lack confidence, but show tremendous promise when they are engaged in art. They enjoy when they are in small group discussions with me or one of my assistants. This allows them that precious moment to shine, to showcase their talent. My school is a Title ! school in a high poverty area of Brooklyn. Most of the students are on free or reduced lunch. But it is a school that caters well to its students. My students love engaging in art projects where they can really be themselves and display their creativity. My room is the liveliest when my students are engaged in art.

My Project

My students are motivated to learn. Thus, I am constantly looking for innovative ways to channel all their interests. Empowering them through Art is one way to do this. My students love to draw, paint and create. The art supplies I have requested will enable them to complete all their projects in a bright and bold fashion. Our curriculum is inquiry and project based, so my students need construction paper and scissors to make designs of rocks and civilizations. They need paint, paint brushes, colored pencils and crayons to highlight and beautify their drawings. A few of my students have mobility issues so it is important for them to have comfort grips as they are designing. My student with sensory issues can create his very own designs, with his doodle book. With the "twisteez", my students can use their imaginations to create people, animals, minerals, buildings, planets as we immerse them more and more into STEAM. Please help my students develop their artistic talents.

Georgia O'Keeffe stated, "I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for".

Art is the voice for some of my students. It allows for them that medium of expression that words could never enunciate. I have seen some of my shyest students become energized through the magical power of art. "Empowering students through Art" is one way of allowing that innate talent to be realized. Please help my class get their much needed art supplies.
