Empowering Students Through Art, Music and Writing

My students need spaces and materials to express themselves through art. They need music, art mediums, and physical spaces to work together to learn through art.

My Students

My students love to express themselves. My students come from various backgrounds and many of them have not had exposure to any mediums of art. My students do not learn in conventional ways, so it is important to use other means, like art, music, drawing, writing, and listening.

My students are primarily African American and Hispanic students.

We currently do not have an Art program and only receive music twice a week. My school has an extremely high poverty rate of 93%. School is a place my students can express themselves and be creative. In Kindergarten, my students are still trying to figure out who they are. My students love to sing and create things, but they do not have the opportunity to do so. They rarely have the opportunity at school. With these materials, I can help my students in the way they learn best- through hands-on learning and through art.

My Project

My materials will be used to create opportunities for students to express themselves using art. We will learn content through music, use books as inspiration for drawing and art projects, use an easel to work collaboratively with our friends, and write as a way to express ourselves. My students will use these materials every day, in almost every lesson. These materials will be great for my ELL students and students without good background knowledge because they will help them build vocabulary, all while learning and expressing themselves. My students will also use these materials to learn to work collaboratively with their peers, which they struggle with. They will do so by sharing the space and materials.

These products will allow me to completely change how I teach my students.

It will give me the physical space and resources to be able to give my students what they need: art, music, collaboration, and most of all, fun. I want to be able to teach them art concepts and show the students how art impacts our lives each and every day. My school cannot give the students art daily, but with these materials, I can.
