Empowering Students Through Art: A Xylophone to Inspire!

My students need a concert xylophone to help enhance our percussion section and allow us to expand our repertoire.

My Students

"Music can change the world because it can change people." ~Bono

Our Title 1 school is located on a rural island in Alaska.

On any given day my students can be found fishing in a nearby river, playing volleyball or disc golf at our high school, riding their bike through the rain (it rains a lot here), or hanging out with their friends on a local pier. The nearest movie theater is 4 hours away by boat. The quickest way to a large shopping mall is via 2 plane rides. Given our remote location, my kids are very involved with the local community and love to express their creativity. As their teacher, my job is to encourage their musicality and help them achieve their dreams.

My Project

My students need a concert xylophone to help strengthen our ability to read music and allow us to broaden our musical repertoire. A xylophone has a high range and crisp tone that strengthens the sound of our band and is a commonly required instrument for most concert music. Even though we are a small band, our selections range from popular movie themes to well-known classics. This xylophone would empower my students through art by helping us expand our sound and highlight the link between music and other subjects. A piece by Aaron Copland connects us to American history; I use math to help us understand syncopation; We use lyrics and grammar to figure out phrasing and meaning. This xylophone would enrich our exploration of other subjects. This xylophone would benefit both my middle and high school bands and would be used by generations of students.

A donation to this project will help inspire decades of percussion students who use this xylophone.

It will allow us to create a more colorful, inspiring sound during our rehearsals and concerts and will help my student percussionists hone their mallet technique. Help us make beautiful music on our Alaskan island!
