Empowering Students: Piano Instruction at Our Military Title I School

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach K-5 Music in Yuma, Arizona, at a Title I school where more than 60% of our students come from economically disadvantaged families, and over 75% are from minority backgrounds. Our school is also a proud Purple Heart School, serving as the military outreach campus for the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Yuma. About half of our students come from military families, and many face the unique challenges of frequent relocation and deployment-related separation.
As their Music teacher, I get asked one question more than any other—from kindergartners to fifth graders: "Can we please learn how to play piano?" Right now, we only have one piano in our Music room.
It's simply not possible to teach a class of students with just a single instrument.
That’s why I’m asking for your help. I'm hoping to provide a classroom set of 30 student keyboards so I can introduce piano instruction next school year. Having individual keyboards will allow every student to learn, explore, and develop their musical abilities together.
Learning piano in elementary school offers so many benefits: it strengthens fine motor skills, supports early literacy and math development, enhances memory and focus, and gives students an expressive outlet for emotions they may not have the words to express. For our students—many of whom face economic or emotional hardship—Music is not just enrichment; it is connection, expression, and joy.
Music is a universal language. It unites us across backgrounds, borders, and experiences. By helping fund this project, you are putting real instruments into the hands of children who are eager to learn and grow through the power of music.
