I teach 6th and 8th grade science at a middle school in Washington State. We are a NASA Explorer School. As such, we not only study outer space, but also concentrate on our own Earth.
My students are fascinated with weather and climate, with storms holding a special interest. Weather and Climate is part of our 6th and 8th grade curricula and can come alive when experiments are combined with high interest guided reading. National science standards now mandate that students must not only understand the scientific process, but must also be able to communicate scientifically.
The weather, climate, storm, and hurricane reading materials will provide a perfect support for our investigations on weather and climate. These high interest reading materials will reinforce scientific concepts while at the same time strengthening reading and writing skills. Scientific reading and writing is often overlooked. However, with your support, my students will be reading about the very concepts they are studying in science. They will also analyze the readings and communicate their understandings in written form.
Your support will help to integrate literacy in science in order to increase student achievement. Our students must be proficient in all aspects of science, including scientific literacy. Thank you for helping to empower our next generation of scientists.
