Empowering Readers: Unlocking Literacy with an iPad

Help me give my students an iPad to support their multisensory learning, enhance their reading and writing skills, and provide engaging, individualized instruction aligned with the Orton-Gillingham approach.

My Project

An iPad will enhance reading support in my classroom, here's how:

1.

Interactive Multisensory Learning

- Apps for Phonics and Decoding: Tools like OG Card Decks, Nessy Learning, or Reading Horizons will reinforce phonics patterns and decoding skills with interactive, visual, and auditory support for students.

- Writing Practice: Apps like Letter School or Writing Wizard will allow students to practice tracing letters and words with tactile feedback, reinforcing kinesthetic learning.

- Sound Manipulation: Programs like Phonics Genius or Blending Board will help students practice blending, segmenting, and manipulating sounds.

2. Progress Monitoring and Data Collection

- I will be able use apps like SeeSaw or Google Forms to track student progress, record performance on decoding/encoding tasks, and document oral reading fluency for analysis.

- Students can record their reading with the iPad, enabling playback for self-assessment or for me to review fluency and accuracy.

3. Visual and Auditory Reinforcement

- Digital Whiteboards: Apps like Notability or Jamboard will let students break words into syllables, highlight phonograms, and manipulate letters or words, mimicking the hands-on approach of OG instruction.

- Text-to-Speech and Speech-to-Text: Tools like Voice Dream Reader or Read&Write will support struggling readers by reinforcing auditory learning.

4. Access to a Variety of Resources

- E-Books with Adjustable Features: Apps like Epic! or Kindle will allow access to grade-level texts with features like text enlargement, highlighting, or embedded dictionaries, accommodating various student needs.

- Video Lessons: I can record or use pre-made instructional videos to reinforce lessons and allow students to revisit them independently.

5. Facilitating Differentiation

- The iPad will allow me to provide customized activities and resources to meet the specific needs of individual students, such as scaffolding supports or advanced challenges.

By integrating an iPad into instruction, I can make learning engaging, accessible, and efficient while maintaining the fidelity of the OG approach.
