This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
"Ms. Robertson, can you get some more of these kinds of books?" My students are eager readers. During our literacy small groups, they love having time to sit down and enjoy a good book. I'll even catch students reading during free time! For many of my students, reading does not come easily to them, so having high interest books that they want to read is essential in helping them progress in their reading comprehension and fluency skills.
Through the help of donors from other projects, I have gotten lots of great books that my students love to read.
But as we approach the middle of the year, some of my most eager readers have read all the books that I have from their favorite series, and we are in need of a refresh. Included in this project are some class-favorite box sets like "I Survived," "Science Comics," and "Dog Man." I have also included some books that were specifically requested by some of my students who have finished all the books I have of their favorite series.
Also included in this project are other series that I hope will encourage my more proficient readers to explore other genres besides graphic novels. The "Can You Survive?," "You Choose Game Day Sports," and "Solve Them Yourself Mystery Picture Mystery Adventures" contain more text than graphic novels while still engaging readers by giving them a role to play as they read by choosing what happens in the story and using clues to solve the mysteries along with the characters.
Engagement is key for helping my students to progress in their reading skills, and I know these books will appeal to my students this year and for years to come.
