My students need mentor texts such as "Sick Simon," "What Mess?," and "Dragons Love Tacos" to help them learn to read with expression and write using the six traits.

My Students
One of my favorite quotes is "Everyone is a reader, some just haven't found their favorite book yet." While I am not sure who said it, it sticks with me. I want every child to leave my kindergarten classroom a reader, I want them to love reading and to always have a book in their hand.
I teach in a rural town in Illinois.
My students, like others across the country, are familiar with the classics, but lack knowledge of newer books that have come out. They are eager to read and write and are looking to me for help in that area. The best way to help the students learn to read and write is to show them good literature that models what they should be doing.
My Project
Using books like "What Mess?" and "Dragon Loves Tacos", my students will learn to read and write by modeling their favorite new children's literature books. "This Book Just Ate My Dog" is a great new book that I will use to teach my students about the parts of a book, particularly the gutter and how to navigate it when reading and writing. "Sick Simon" is another great new mentor text to use in the classroom. It will help teach my students about using speech bubbles to tell a story and will teach my students about using characters and voice in their writing. These are just a few examples of how these books will be used in my classroom. Using these new children's literature books will help to get my students excited about writing and will provide them with opportunities to have solid mentor texts available to them throughout the school year.
These books would be a huge blessing for the students in my class.
When students have access to good literature, they love to read and they are eager to emulate what they see in their writing. I love seeing my students have 'lightbulb moments' and these books would provide students the opportunity to have those moments throughout the school year.
