My Project

Our classroom is seeking funding to purchase a class set of New Nerd Money by Ian Michael Brock, a groundbreaking book on financial literacy written by a young Black entrepreneur whose story inspires and empowers students from all backgrounds.

New Nerd Money is not only a guide to financial literacy but also a powerful example of representation in action.

This project is especially meaningful because our students themselves requested these books after meeting Ian Michael Brock at a recent finance event. His story—earning $50,000 at age 16 and breaking barriers as a Black entrepreneur—deeply resonated with them. They were inspired by his journey and expressed a strong desire to read his book together as a class. The students are also eager to invite Ian Michael Brock to our school for a book signing and discussion, hoping to connect with him further and learn directly from his experiences.

Many of our students come from communities historically marginalized by economic inequities. By learning from an author who shares their experiences and challenges, students will see themselves reflected in the curriculum, fostering a sense of belonging and possibility. Ian’s story and lessons empower students to challenge stereotypes, break cycles of poverty, and become leaders in their communities.

By supporting this project, you’ll help our students gain practical financial skills and entrepreneurial confidence. Also, connect financial concepts to real-life challenges and opportunities and engage in meaningful conversations about racial justice, representation, and equity in finance.

Lastly, they will be inspired by a role model who proves their dreams are achievable

Your support will help us build a more just, inclusive, and empowered classroom—and may even bring the author himself to inspire our students in person!
