it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am a brand-new Early Childhood Special Education teacher in Lemon Grove, a diverse community where nearly 70% of our student population comes from low-income households. My preschool Special Day Class (SDC) learners have unique developmental, communication, and sensory needs, and they thrive when given the right combination of hands-on materials, clear organization, and engaging instructional tools. Because many of our students do not have consistent access to learning resources at home, it’s crucial to equip our classroom with everything from sturdy wobble chairs and fidget bands (to help them stay focused) to magnetic blocks, sensory fidget tubes, and alphabet beads (to spark their curiosity and foster motor skills). Additionally, organizational items like file organizers, plastic baskets, and a mobile laptop caddy will help me keep materials within easy reach, ensuring daily instruction runs smoothly.
With these resources, I will be able to provide a stimulating environment where my students can strengthen their communication skills, explore math and science concepts, and develop social-emotional competencies.
The varied manipulative sets—including magnetic gears, counting peg boards, puzzle racks, and interlocking gears—will allow children to practice problem-solving and fine motor skills in playful ways that spark joy in learning. The printer and cardstock will enable me to create customized visual supports, schedules, and behavior charts, which are critical for supporting the needs of preschoolers with disabilities.
