This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls," Pablo Picasso. I believe that art is an outlet for children, especially those who struggle with academic subjects. Art is an outlet for those children, and truly all of the children in my class.
I teach twenty-six first graders in an urban school district.
Our school is a K-8 school, so my students will be together until they graduate and go off to high school. As such, we are a true community of learners, growing, changing, and cheering each other on!
My Project
My students will be able to use the cray pas to draw self portraits. They will use pencils to sketch. They will use paint to "re-create" Sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh. This will be an extension activity after our study of the life cycle of seeds. The construction paper will be used to create various art projects throughout the year. In the fall, we make construction paper trees to show leaves changing color and falling down. We create and write on snowmen and Valentines in the winter. Of course, the construction paper is also used to create thank you cards for donorschoose as well as Mother's Day and Father's Day cards. The gemstones are to add a special something to our crafts, and the stickers are rewards for a job well done. The card stock will display student work. The pencils will keep us writing and drawing.
My class absolutely LOVES drawing, painting and creating.
This is especially helpful when I need to reach a struggling student. Many times a child who is having difficulty with academics, is artistically gifted. Allowing children to create art that coincides with the curriculum is empowering my students to learn. These materials will not be available without your support.
