My Project

Project Rationale

Too often, reading is taught in isolation, disconnected from students’ lived experiences and the broader curriculum.

This project is rooted in the belief that literacy thrives when students can make meaningful-connections between texts and the world around them. The selected novels feature protagonists from diverse cultural backgrounds and challenge students to explore themes such as identity, perseverance, loss, imagination, and justice—universal concepts that resonate across disciplines.

For example:

• My Life as an Ice Cream Sandwich introduces science-fiction and space science, sparking STEAM connections in science and technology.

• Ghost explores themes of trauma, resilience, and athleticism, offering tie-ins to health education and social-emotional learning.

• Kira-Kira addresses family dynamics, immigration, and labor rights-with crossovers into history and civics.

• Where the Mountain Meets the Moon blends Chinese folklore with quest narratives, opening up discussions in geography, mythology, and visual arts.

• Edgar Allan Poe’s stories delve-into gothic literature and psychological suspense, supporting interdisciplinary studies in both literature and science.

Project Goals

1. Enhance Literacy Skills: Strengthen students’ reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and analytical thinking through rich literary texts.

2. Foster Cross-Disciplinary Connections: Collaborate across subject areas to build thematic units around each novel.

3. Use inquiry-based projects: Collaborative discussions and creative responses (e.g., podcasts, art installations, multimedia presentations) to deepen understanding.

Expected Outcomes

• Improved literacy scores and student confidence in reading.

• Increased student engagement and participation

• Measurable growth in critical thinking and communication skills

Conclusion

This project is not just about reading books—it’s about empowering students to see themselves in stories, to question the world around them, and to express their insights across academic disciplines. With your support, Empowering Literacy Through Cross-Disciplinary Novel Studies will ignite curiosity, deepen understanding, and build bridges across content areas—preparing our students not just to read, but to thrive.
