it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Money!Money!Money! That's all we hear about! However, if you are in kindergarten you do not know the value of a dollar. We are an inner-city classroom in a high-need community that has had funding cut dramatically! The impact has been especially difficult for classroom children because there is so much pressure to "do more with less".
The value of a dollar is a difficult concept to teach young children. They are constantly seeing advertisements to buy, yet, they do not fully understand how much it costs. In our classroom we spend a great deal of time discussing money and what you can buy. However, we do not have enough supplies for the classroom. Due to drastic budget cuts there is not any money for additional classroom supplies. My students are our "future mathematicians" and need hands-on experiences as much as possible to understand monetary concepts. At this age, everyone is interested in math, and as a teacher I would like to keep it this way. To keep the students interested they need to be able to handle math concepts. What better way to do this than to work with money!! Being able to "purchase" their own materials will make them aware of the value of a dollar.
The students enjoy going to a store and purchasing items with their money. If we had enough play money for every child we would be able to purchase items as a class and let everyone have a turn. The students would also be able to use paper money which we never have an opportunity to use. The "big" money would enable the children that have more difficulty an additional resource to use to help. Students that are English Language Learners in our class will have the opportunity to make purchases because they will be able to "see" their money! Money is an equal opportunity employer in the classroom!!
Your help will ensure my students understand the concept of money. It is important that even the youngest child be able to identify and count money. You will make it possible for my students to be able to participate in numerous activities that empower them to become future mathematicians.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
