Empowering ESOL Students through Poetry and the Arts

My Students

“Art is literacy of the heart.” My students love showing off their creativity. I want to capture this enthusiasm to improve their literacy skills.

My ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) students come from a variety of different backgrounds.

Many of them are born in the United States. They are learning English as a second (or third) language. The majority of them are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. They are all eager to learn.

My Project

I am "Empowering Students Through Art" with a project that integrates poetry, music, and visual art. Students will have the opportunity to listen to poems set to music using the recorded books and Teachers Pay Teachers digital recordings. For auditory learners, hearing the poems along with rhythm and beat will help them to remember the lyrics and read the words. After listening to the poems students will read or sing them to practice their fluency. For visual learners, students will illustrate poems to show comprehension. They will choose from drawing, paper cutting, or stamping. As reference materials I am requesting drawing and stamping books. I am also asking for stamps and ink pads for them to use.

Your donation will help my ESOL students to improve their literacy skills while also learning through music and visual arts.

Empowering Students Through Art will help to capture the attention of my students and keep them engaged in their learning.
