Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This student-led literacy initiative is designed to enhance access to literacy education and materials for our Title I students, particularly English Language Learners, in our community. My freshmen are passionate about creating this English Language Learning Center as a gift to honor and support our current EL students, but also our incoming EL students.
The brainchild of my freshman students, this project aims to support the development of reading, writing, and speaking skills in EL 9th graders by providing them with essential literacy resources using the ELL Center as the vehicle for literacy growth and success.
The project will focus on establishing an ELL Center, as outlined in the Reading Rockets Curriculum and Instruction article "Supporting ELLs in the Mainstream Classroom." This center will be equipped with the following supplies to support four key sections: Classroom Library, Writing Center, Listening Center, and Speaking Center. Since this is their initiative to address literacy deficits in our building, my freshman will be responsible setting up, organizing, creating labels, and maintaining this center.
ELL Classroom Library: Starting with a small, humble collection of books selected by my Freshman to support language development and comprehension.
ELL Writing Center: A dedicated space equipped with writing materials such as pencils, notebooks, and graphic organizers. The graphic organizers will be laminated for repeated usage (expo markers!) and housed in trays for quick access. The writing center will provide ELL students with the tools they need to practice their writing skills.
ELL Listening Center: Equipped with headphones that provide EL students with the opportunity to their English comprehension skills.
ELL Speaking Center: Equipped with resources for practicing oral language skills, such as flashcards, picture cards, games, and conversation starters. The speaking center will provide EL students with the opportunity to practice speaking English in a supportive environment.
