My Students
Many of our most creative thinkers and artists have one thing in common; dyslexia. Leonardo Da Vinci, Pablo Picasso, and Albert Einstein were all dyslexic. So we have to ask the question are dyslexics more creative than other people? Or, was their creativity nurtured by the people around them?
Empowering students through the arts is an essential part of every child's education.
Children with dyslexia often struggle with reading, writing and spelling, but are excited when those subjects are introduced in creative, exciting, multisensory ways that include the arts.
My Project
I am asking for large alphabet stepping stones that my students can dance, skip and hop across while they listen to their letter songs. Dancing through the ABCs will be so much more engaging than looking at an ABC chart on the wall. I am also requesting play-doh and letter mats so the children can build and mold their letters, white crayons and composition books so that I can write letters and words on the pages and then have the students discover their letters and spelling words by coloring with a rainbow of colors over the white crayon. We also need some blocks to for dramatic play with nursery rhymes like Humpty Dumpty. Finally, I'm asking for a bouncy seat so that my students with sensory disorders can "feel the music" and move even when they're too overwhelmed to get out of their seat.
I am so excited about this project and feel these resources will help me keep my kids motivated and experiencing the arts when we are reading, writing, spelling and working on their ABCs.
