Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a special education teacher serving a beautifully diverse and multilingual group of students, I am seeking funding for a C-Pen 3 to help bridge the reading gap and foster independence in my classroom. Many of my students face learning challenges such as dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning disabilities that make decoding text and accessing grade-level content a significant barrier to their success. The C-Pen 3, a portable text-to-speech device, provides immediate support by reading printed text aloud, allowing students to engage with material that would otherwise be inaccessible.
Our classroom is comprised of Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and immigrant students whose voices and stories deserve to be heard and honored within the learning environment.
Yet, systemic inequities in education often create a gap in access to assistive technologies that support literacy for students of color and those with disabilities. This tool will allow my students to learn with dignity, autonomy, and joy. It will help them build confidence and comprehension, allowing them to take ownership of their learning while participating more fully in classroom discussions and assignments.
The C-Pen 3 is also portable, which means my students can use it across settings—from whole-group instruction to small groups to independent work—empowering them to be more active learners. By using the pen to access both culturally representative texts and grade-level curriculum, students not only improve their reading fluency but also see their identities reflected and valued in their education.
With your support, we can work toward educational equity by equipping our classroom with a resource that promotes racial justice, literacy, and independence. Your donation will provide my students with access to tools that enable them to meet high expectations while receiving the support they need and deserve.
