Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are heritage Spanish speakers—bilingual, bicultural, and full of potential. Many come from households where Spanish is spoken daily, but they’ve rarely had the opportunity to study it in a way that honors their identity or challenges their academic skills. They deserve a space where their Spanish is an asset, not just a checkbox on a form.
This fall, I’m launching a brand-new course: Spanish for Spanish Speakers.
The goal? To skip past Spanish 1 & 2 and dive straight into rigorous reading, writing, and conversation—entirely in Spanish. We’ll explore Latin American and U.S. Latinx literature, study professional vocabulary for the workplace, and build confidence through presentations and storytelling.
But here’s the challenge: I have a budget of $0.
What I need most are books. I want to expose these students to voices that reflect their backgrounds and open new doors—authors like Sandra Cisneros, Julia Alvarez, Juan Rulfo, and more. With your help, I can create a small classroom library that supports critical thinking, deep conversations, and cultural pride.
Your donation directly supports students who are often placed in generic language tracks that don’t reflect their fluency or lived experience. This course is designed to challenge them at their level—with rich literature, real-world vocabulary, and a focus on academic Spanish.
A classroom full of engaging books will help them see themselves in the curriculum and stretch their reading and writing in ways they’ve never been asked to before. You're not just giving them books—you're giving them a seat at the table.
We’re looking for Spanish-language and bilingual books (novels, short stories, nonfiction), particularly by Latinx authors. Every book will be read, discussed, and appreciated.
Thank you for supporting my students' growth, identity, and academic journey.
