Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have had the pleasure of teaching the most incredible 11th and 12th grade students for the past twelve years. Every year we look for ways to challenge ourselves in our learning community and my students, who are all young men and women of color, live in a high poverty neighborhood, always rising to the challenge.

For the past six years we have been working on building students literacies beyond the traditional to the technological. They see the power of the web to communicate their ideas but we wish to allow them the access to create products that can be a part of this. However we have very limited technological equipment. We have outdated computers, no cameras and no microphones. So, as we prepare to create podcasts and video clips that are tailored for the web, we have only been able to do so in the hypothetical. My students have so much to say about serious issues both in the world and their studies and they would like to be able to share their ideas with other people across the world.

All we need is a quality microphone, some podcasting software, a simple and portable digital video camera and a memory card. It's that simple. Then, instead of the students sharing their ideas inside the classroom and their voice being confined by the walls of our building, they can make connections across land and ocean.

Your donation will empower my students to believe that their voice matters in this world. Your generosity and sharing will allow my students to share their ideas in a way they see as possible every day but have not been able to access before.
