My Students
Did you have a listening center in your Kindergarten class? Do you remember what a treat it was to get to that center? All the fun pictures and words and letters start to become alive without a teacher's help! These listening activities will engage students independently & allow for accountability.
I have 24 Kindergarten "Froggies" in my morning class and now have 18 "Froggies" in my afternoon Extended Day class.
These students in the afternoon are the ones who enter school already needing additional support to reach grade level expectations. We are trying to catch them up before the achievement gap widens. Many of these students have not attended preschool. Most qualify for free or reduced lunch (our school has over 70% low income families).
My Project
Workshop is the time of day that the froggies like the most. Workshop provides multiple opportunities for differentiated learning. The teacher has the opportunity to address individual student needs during one on one conferences and during small group guided reading meetings. This is only possible if there are solid and engaging learning activities happening independently for the rest of the class. This listening station will reinforce what's already being taught in the class and will also extend the learning while the teacher is addressing the needs of others. This center will truly help these already low performing "froggies" jump high above expectations.
These are the students you here about needing all the support they can get.
Workshops and centers work. They are motivating, engaging, and further the ability for the teacher to engage in small groups and one on one with students. This is especially crucial timing to give anything at all because districts and teachers budgets are tight due to the economy and budget cuts. Help these already low performing students make huge froggie leaps and jump above expectations. It is for their future and ours
