Empower Students to Conquer Cancer

My students need models, microscope slides, UV-detecting beads, and a poster to learn about cancer and the cell cycle.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Abrams-Ruque's classroom raised $544

My Students

Almost everyone knows someone whose life has been affected by cancer. I want to teach my students the science behind cancer and the cell cycle.

I am lucky to teach around 100 high school students in grades 10-12.

We are a rural, low-income school district surrounded by farmland, which many students live and work on. Many of my students are tactile or kinesthetic learners. After our district downsized and cut our industrial arts and family consumer science programs and half of our music, agriculture, and art programs, I realized there were not many hands-on opportunities left for students. Now that they are without many of their interactive elective courses, I can tell my students miss being able to get out of their desks, work with their hands, and create things. I feel more responsibility than ever to provide hands-on opportunities for students. I strive to provide as many inquiry lab experiences as possible throughout all of my science courses despite the district's financial struggles.

My Project

Students will use the cell models and mitosis poster to learn about the cell cycle and how cells divide. Students will look at cells using the Microscope Slide Lab Pack. We will discuss how mistakes in the cell cycle can result in cancer and students will use the Malignant Tissues Microscope Slides to see real examples of what cancer looks like on a cellular level and to make comparisons to normal cells. As we discuss common forms of cancers, students will get to see and feel the Human Breast with Irregular Masses Model and Human Skin Cancer Disk Set Model to learn about self-checks and symptoms. Lastly, each student will receive their own Solar Energy Bead to add to a necklace or keychain, which will change color to indicate to them when they are being exposed to harmful UV rays.

Donations will improve our school by giving students an opportunity to do hands-on, engaging lab activities.

It will build student confidence using real-life science lab equipment and prepare them for future lab experiences in college or careers. It will also allow students to visual our class content and gain a deeper understanding of cancer and cells. It will make students aware of the importance of self-exams and other important cancer-related topics so that they can share with others.
