Empower Students Through Reading Diverse Books for Our Literature Circles
Help me give my students diverse books to participate in literature circles. Literature circles will promote cooperation, foster a love for reading, give students choices, and build comprehension skills.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I aim to create a library of diverse books for our literature circles and novel studies, that empowers my students to engage with texts that are relevant to their own lives and the world around them. This project will cultivate empathy, understanding, and critical thinking, which are vital skills in today's world.
Reading diverse books has a profound impact on students.
It helps them understand and respect differences and recognize the universal experiences that connect us all. My 8th-grade classes participate in multiple novel studies throughout the year. They also participate in literature circles in which groups, are allowed to pick a book to read for the month and then engage in weekly student-led discussions. During these discussions, they share their thoughts and deepen their understanding of the stories. In this way, students will be actively involved in their learning.
Currently, our class has very limited options for novel-study and literature circle books and I want to change that. The books I am requesting are books my students are excited to read and address issues such as identity, family, belonging, and social justice. These novels focus on characters overcoming challenges and discovering their strength and resilience.
In our classroom, every student deserves to see themselves in the stories they read, and this project will ensure they have that opportunity. By supporting this project, you will be giving my students a gift that will last a lifetime—an appreciation for literature and a broader understanding of the world.
