My Students
Igniting a passion for reading in my students is my passion as a teacher. As I’ve weeded through our classroom collection of books, I’ve realized that it needs to be brought up to date, and become more relatable to my 3rd graders.
We are a diverse community of eager readers wanting to see ourselves and learn about others that are different from us in the books we read.
We want to see our classroom filled with books with diverse characters and written by authors of color like us.
My Project
I work at a school with over 25 languages spoken. My class is filled with students with a myriad of cultures, religions, customs, races, and family traditions. As a teacher, I understand how important it is for students to see themselves represented in the books they read.
My students need these books to serve as "mirrors" to validate who they are, to see the beauty in themselves and their families, to be empowered and inspired, and feel connection and belonging. They also need books to serve as "windows" to peer through enabling them to get a glimpse of cultures different from their own.
These books can offer a new perspective, build empathy, create better global citizens, and help create a community of learners that work together.
