My Students
My students do not have any class sets of books. Reading a text as a class is a great way to learn together and foster meaningful discussions about sensitive topics.
I am a special education teacher.
My co-teacher and myself are teaching collaboratively this year and are very excited! Our school is small, but has a great sense of community. However, we lack the funds for new books. We've had virtually the same library for the past 3 years and would love to have a class set of new books.
My Project
By having a class set of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, students will have the unique opportunity of reading a book as a class. The will participate in their own 'book club.' They will learn about the holocaust through historical fiction. I believe this book will foster critical thinking and compassion in my students.
Reading a book together would be an invaluable experience for my class.
This book will open the door to deep discussion, a broader understanding of history, and will work to improve a sense of community among my students.
