This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach 3rd grade at a Title I school where the majority of my students are English Language Learners. Many of them are reading at a kindergarten or first-grade level and need strong phonics support to build foundational skills. During small group reading time, I provide targeted instruction—but I lack the right materials to meet their needs.
Most decodable books available are written for very young children and include characters and themes that feel too childish for my 8- and 9-year-old students.
This can lead to embarrassment and low motivation. My students need decodable books that support early reading skills but include mature, age-appropriate content they can connect with.
Because our families face economic challenges, I cannot ask them to contribute to these resources. Your support will help me provide engaging, skill-building books during small group instruction—so my students can grow as readers, gain confidence in English, and develop a love for learning.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
