My students need a diverse display of prominent Americans on the walls of our classroom.

My Students
My students are fantastic! They come from a variety of different backgrounds, as diverse as California itself. We have a healthy balance of young people that helps foster a strong community of learning.
Students are growing more and more invested in social studies because of our country's political climate.
That gives me an unbelievable teaching opportunity in my first year on the job. I'm dedicated to foster their growth into future leaders. Leaders who are strong, knowledgeable, and respectful critical thinkers who powerfully advocate for their communities.
My Project
When you think of what's displayed in an American history classroom, what do you see? This is what I grew up with. There are pictures of the Bill of Rights and Constitution, then maps of the country and world. All good things. After that, it's a lot of similar-looking people. Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, JFK, etc. Everyone on the wall is an old President and looks a "certain way," to put it in simple terms. It's hard for a minority student to have ties to who's on the walls of a typical American history classroom.
I want my students to be inspired and empowered by people they can identify with on the walls of my classroom.
Yes, I want the maps and Bill of Rights. I want more than just a few dead Presidents, though. Martin and Coretta should be on the walls with Abe. So should Rosa, Maya Angelou, and Cesar Chavez. Not every display I want is available through this site, but I'm happy to start with the list below. I want my students to see our classroom's walls and feel included, to know that someone like them can achieve big things in this world.
