Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hands-on learning is the best kind of learning! Art supplies in the class promote project-based learning which is one of the most effective and engaging ways for students to learn.

My students are from the inner city of New York; the majority of them live in government housing or with government assistance of some type.

They have duties and expectations apart from school; such as watching younger siblings, cooking for the family, or cleaning. Their lives allow them little time to grow up and even less time for themselves. School and books are their chance to better themselves, help them get ahead, and to find their "happy place". Education is the key and being able to access learning through modified materials and project based learning is the best way for students with disabilities to learn.

My Project

The supplies requested in this project will help my students create projects for a range of units. Starting with our project to recreate, via drawing, diagram, or reenactment, a "crime scene" as depicted through the conflicting testimonies given by Tom Robinson and Miss Mayella. In addition, the pens, paper, and other supplies requested will allow the students to access the text we read in class through a project-based learning approach. Creating posters and scenes will help students depict and develop their understandings of the books we read in class. The pens and additional materials will enable my students to color code, annotate and create portfolios that coincide with their readings.

Students with disabilities have immense potential if they are allowed to “enter” learning from the entry points that best suits their learning style, and for my class that entry point is project based learning.
