Empower Choice and Sharing through Flexible Seating

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach a self-contained special education class with students with intellectual disabilities including down syndrome and autism. My students are varied in their abilities. Every day is different. Every day we work hard and don't forget to laugh.
We are working hard to stimulate cognitive, language, reading and social skill development.
My students enjoy talking about themselves, reading, drawing, music, and technology. We are in the Port of Los Angeles and are proud to learn about our community's founding and history.
My Project
The best way to engage my learners is to consider their needs and empower them with a choice. Some of them need to rock back and forth (they can do this in a wobble chair). Some of them have sensory needs (that can be met with a wobble cushion or comfy stool). My students also need to improve their posture, core strength, and stamina. Many of them need to learn to improve their communication skills which would include negotiating, compromising and taking turns. Flexible seating meets these needs!
When my project is funded, my learners will begin having seating options.
Some of their needs will be met increasing engagement and motivation!
