My Project

I am a newly appointed Science/STEM teacher who is beginning from scratch. I work with students in both whole group and smaller enrichment groups in grades 2-5. Behaviors of some of the most challenging students change when they come into my science lab because they love the hands-on approach I offer.

My objective this year is to teach students that science can be fun and rewarding through rich, student-driven exploration tasks, but I am lacking the resources.

I would love to offer my students the materials to deepen their understanding of grade-level standards, and also to expand their knowledge of the engineering and design process through fun, STEM based activites such as Build Your Own Solar Powered Car Kit, the Egg Drop Kit, and the Snap Circuits Kit.

The Structures Kits would allow me to give my enrichment students the deeper understanding first hand of how to plan, create, test, and improve models through the use of various materials. My enrichment students in fifth grade would be able to utilize the Carolina Hydroponics Kit when working in the Energy and Matter in Organisms Unit and prove first hand that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water.

I also know that my higher enrichment students would love to use the Make it Bounce Kit and the Lakeshore Fairy Tales Problem Solving Kit to enhance their love for science through exciting, hands-on activities that make them want to learn more. My fourth graders can dive deeper into the Rocks and Fossils Unit with the Fossil Hunt Kit, and seeing fossils up close and personal. Working with enrichment groups has given the highest performing students a new found love of learning.
