This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
According to the Harvard Business Review, " Recent research in neuroscience suggests that you might look to the library for solutions; reading literary fiction helps people develop empathy, theory of mind, and critical thinking." (March, 2020).
It is wonderful to see studies catch up with what English teachers around the world have known forever--reading helps creates more empathetic people, which is something our world needs now more than ever.
The greatest moments in our classroom happen when my students are immersed in their independent reading books. You can see them losing track of time, letting go of their own worries and anxieties, and becoming absorbed in the written words that are on the pages before them. When our independent reading time is over, they will close their books and excitedly chat with their table mates about characters, conflict, and plot without even realizing they are achieving academic standards...the best kind of learning!
In my classroom students are swapping stories and becoming fully engaged readers--reading because they love it, not because they are obligated.
When students finish a book, we conference and discuss their books. These conversations allow me to know my students in ways that no assessment can accomplish or essay can reveal.
By donating to this project, you will help restore my rapidly depleting library bookshelves with highly interesting and engaging stories that students are clamoring to read and have specifically requested.
